<Exhibition Overview >
The Edo people's leisurely pastime of renaming the fleeting and unpredictable "sorrowful world" "Ukiyo" (floating world) and venting their sorrows through jokes, satire, and festivals bore fruit in ukiyo-e and genre paintings, and is still alive in the works of Sharaku, Hokusai, and Hiroshige. In this exhibition, contemporary artists respond to this spirit of sophistication and playfulness, depicting "Ukiyo" with their own interpretations. We hope you will feel the spirit of Edo through this diverse range of works, from homages to ukiyo-e to scenes of Yoshiwara.
