[I tried printing] The charm of EPSON Premium Satin Canvas & Premium Matte Canvas
Canvas from EPSON.
Premium satin canvas and premium matte canvas.
Since PHOTOPRI decided to use these two types of paper, the number of orders from customers, including trial prints, has gradually increased.
Canvas is a matte canvas media made of a thick and soft cotton and polyester blend.
The quality that takes advantage of the unique texture of canvas is both popular and well-known.
When we hear the word canvas, we tend to think of it as something used for hand-painted works such as oil paintings, but there are also types of canvas that can be used for printing.
“What kind of paper is canvas?”
“What are the characteristics of premium satin canvas?”
“What are the characteristics of premium matte canvas?”
“What kind of photos and illustrations are suitable for?”
We would like to introduce this to those who have such concerns and to let them know about its appeal.
<Handling paper>
[EPSON] Choice of premium satin canvas and premium matte canvas
“Cloth” rather than paper
As I mentioned at the beginning, when I think of canvas, I tend to think of it being used for oil paintings.
A major feature of the two types of canvases available at PHOTOPRI is that they are made of cloth .
If you actually pick it up and look at the cross section of the paper, you will see that the threads are combined in a grid pattern to form a single sheet of paper.
Printing paper is usually made with high tear strength to increase its durability, and many are made so that they cannot be torn with a little force.
Even so, there are times when it will break due to an operational error, but this canvas is so strong that it cannot be broken even if you try to break it by hand, so you don't have to worry about that.
Thickness and softness that gives you a sense of security
One of the major characteristics of canvas is that it is thick .
Regular photo paper is about 0.27mm thick, but premium satin canvas is a whopping 0.5mm thick, and premium matte canvas is 0.475mm thick.
It may seem like a small difference, but this "thickness" is an important point that is directly connected to the physical "ease of handling" when creating works.
Another characteristic is the "softness" of the paper itself.
Those of us who handle works of art every day sometimes break them when we pick them up, but the canvas is so soft that you won't notice any "crease marks" when it is bent.
When the size is A3 or larger, you have to be careful when putting the work in a frame, and considering the risk of bending or folding it , it is a big advantage that the paper itself is strong. .
Color does not fade easily
The characteristic of canvas is that it is difficult to see the difference between the color when viewed on a display and the color when printed .
Especially when printing on premium satin canvas (although it is not possible to achieve exactly the same color), the color tone will not be far different from the data.
If you know that the color will be expressed faithfully to the data, it will be very helpful because it will be easier to visualize the final result when editing photos and illustrations.
When printing, using matte ink, matte paper, or matte fine art paper will not prevent colors from fading, but this canvas makes it easy to decide on colors at the editing stage. Excellent.
"Satin" and "Matte"
We rarely receive inquiries from customers asking, "What is the difference between premium satin canvas and premium matte canvas?"
"Satin = semi-gloss" and "matte = non-glossy/non-reflective" .
As you can see when you look at the paper, the premium satin canvas has just the right amount of gloss and the colors are good, giving it a different impression than what you see on a screen.
Premium matte canvas has no gloss, giving it a very calm impression. Color development is slightly inferior compared to premium satin canvas.
This is unavoidable since all matte papers tend to fade in color, but some people may prefer them over satin canvas, depending on how well they match the atmosphere of their work, as they give a calmer impression.
What kind of photos/illustrations are suitable?
Now that we have covered the general characteristics of ``canvas,'' we will discuss what kind of photos and illustrations are suitable for each type of paper.
Is it better suited for illustration printing than photographs?
When I look at the works of people who order canvases, I notice a certain tendency.
That means there are more illustrations than photos .
Both premium satin canvas and premium matte canvas have many illustrations output.
Why is this?
For those who specialize in illustrations,
- Because it matches my style well
- As the final preparation of the work, painterly elements can be added ``through paper''.
- Easy to use and hard to fail
I think there are several reasons.
And for those who specialize in photography,
- Other paper is better for outputting photos.
- The canvas lacks clarity and sharpness.
- Because the photo becomes a painting
Of course, canvas is a paper that can be used to print photos, but when you compare it to other papers, you will come to the conclusion that this is the one you should use for exhibitions.
In particular, I agree with the point that other paper is better for printing photos.
When printing photos, the expressive power of silky paper or glossy paper made overseas is so appealing that I tend to choose them. lol
What works are suitable for premium satin canvas...
That said, there are plenty of opportunities to use premium satin canvas for printing photos as well as illustrations.
Premium satin canvas is colorfast and has good color retention , so it can withstand some photo printing.
However, it is not possible to print clearly, so it is recommended if you have a certain direction, such as ``I want to make it blurry'' or ``I don't need sharpness.''
When I tried using it to print portraits, I felt that the rough texture of the paper surface interfered with the ability to properly express human skin and facial expressions.
We recommend you try it out for subjects such as buildings and trains, or for photos where you want to create a black-and-white or desaturated, emotional look .
Also, among illustration printing, it goes well with ``oil painting style works'' and ``illustrations with a wet texture using oil pastels and crayons.''
Especially when it comes to oil paintings, satin canvas is ideal for creating the characteristic "gloss" feel , and I think it gives a professional finish!
What works are suitable for premium matte canvas...
Premium matte canvas is a high-quality paper that gives a calm impression, as mentioned above.
Matte, non-reflective paper is very easy to use and is useful for printing illustrations.
When you are wondering which paper to choose when printing illustrations, there are many competing matte papers and matte fine art papers.
When using premium matte canvas , the recommended style is ``oil painting style'' .
Due to the characteristics of canvas paper, the unevenness and texture of the paper surface match well with oil painting style illustrations.
This is one type of paper that can accurately express the feeling of a thick coating of drying oil.
It is also recommended for outputting ``digital pastel drawings'' and ``dry textured illustrations using colored pencils and pastels .''
If you want to create a handwritten texture, I think it goes well with paper.
Due to its texture and texture, which is different from paper, you may be able to expect effects unique to cloth printing.
bonus
canvas wood paneling
If you print on canvas paper, you can frame it using a frame, but I personally recommend using a wooden panel .
There's a way to enjoy prints that are printed on premium satin canvas and then covered with wood paneling.
Additionally, you can use gel medium to create an oil painting effect on paneled objects.
This is a new genre of photography that positions the work as ``between photography and painting.''
It's not just printing and finishing, it's also fun to attach the panels and add more flavor from there, so please try printing on canvas paper!
We are planning to update what we created in-house, so please look forward to it!
Would you like to print a trial canvas?
Just like when you buy a car, you take it for a test drive, so before you print, we want you to use the trial print and experience the paper for yourself .
You can't really understand the texture, feel, color reproduction, etc. of a wide variety of papers, such as glossy paper, matte paper, fine art paper, and Japanese paper, until you actually hold the printed material in your hands.
Even if you try to choose the best one from a large number of papers, it may be difficult. There are many people who don't know which one to choose.
You can print a trial print using your own photo data .
We have a trial set according to your preference, so please take advantage of it!
